Major Admission Requirements to Study in Germany

Eligibility Criteria

For Bachelor’s Programs:

  • Completion of 12 years of school education (10+2)

  • University Entrance Qualification (e.g., Studienkolleg or APS Certificate if required)

  • Proof of German language proficiency (for German-taught programs) – B1/B2 level (TestDaF, DSH, or Goethe)

  • IELTS/TOEFL (for English-taught programs)

  • Entrance tests (some programs may require SAT or assessment tests)

For Master’s/MBA Programs:

  • A recognized Bachelor’s degree (usually 3–4 years)

  • GPA/academic performance meets university requirements

  • IELTS/TOEFL (for English-taught programs – usually IELTS 6.5+)

  • GMAT/GRE (for some MBA or technical master’s programs)

  • Work experience (for most MBA programs – 1 to 3 years minimum)

Documents Required

  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates (translated to German/English)

  • Valid Passport (photocopy)

  • Proof of Language Proficiency IELTS / TOEFL (for English-taught)

  • TestDaF / DSH / Goethe-Zertifikat (for German-taught)

Germany Student Visa Timeline

What Happens

Apply to German universities via Uni-Assist, or directly on the university’s portal.

University evaluates documents and issues conditional/unconditional offer.

For Indian students: Apply for APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) certificate. Mandatory since Nov 2022.

Open a Blocked Account (e.g., Expatrio, Fintiba, Deutsche Bank) and deposit €11,208 (or more).

Register for German public (e.g., TK, AOK) or private insurance (for language courses, etc.).

Book appointment at VFS Germany (Hyderabad, Delhi, etc.). Slots are limited—book early!

Collect all required documents: APS, admission letter, blocked account proof, SOP, insurance, etc.

Attend interview, submit biometric data, and submit your complete visa application package.

German Embassy processes your student visa application.

After visa approval, book flights, register in Germany, collect residence permit, and start classes.

Total Timeline Estimate:

Part-time & Post Study Work Rights

Part-time (Student Visa)

  • Up to 120 full days or 240 half days per year.

  • Students may work full-time during vacations.

  • Mini Jobs under €538/month are tax-free and very common among students

  • On-campus jobs, restaurants, delivery services, research assistants, internships.

  • No freelance/self-employed work allowed on a student visa.

Post Study Work (Graduate Visa)

  • After graduation from a recognized German university, students can apply for an 18-month job-seeking visa.

  • During the 18 months, you can work in any job (even unrelated) to support yourself while searching.

  • Once Employed in Field, Apply for an EU Blue Card or Residence Permit for Employment.

  • Blue Card Minimum Salary (as of 2025) Approx. €45,300/year (lower for shortage professions like IT, engineering, etc.).

  • Permanent Residency Eligibility - After 33 months of Blue Card (or 21 months with B1-level German proficiency).

Important Notes:

  • Your residence permit (student visa) automatically ends upon graduation, so you must apply for the job-seeker extension before expiry.

  • Knowledge of German language improves job prospects significantly, especially outside of tech fields.

  • Mandatory internships (required by your curriculum) do not count towards the 120-day limit.

  • Voluntary internships (not part of your course) do count towards the 120/240 limit.
